Last month, I was asked by The Native Society to answer some rather intriguing questions. I hope you find them as inspiring as I did!

What do I do best?

Love. That’s the first thought that came to my head. I wear many hats and have many roles in my life, but all of them revolve around my unquenchable love for other people.

What makes me the best version of myself?

The ‘what’ is being in nature. Enjoying its musical silence. Walking in the sunshine. Having time to think while sitting in a canoe or beside a lake, or running my toes through the sand by the sea.  The ‘who’ is my family. My son, my husband, and friends we call family. They hold me accountable by virtue of their kindness and care. They expect nothing of me, which in turn makes me demand more of myself.

What are my aspirations?

For most of my life I’ve been a big believer in the importance of goals… that envisioning a future is the first and most critical step to creating it. But my thinking on that has evolved. While I still view goals as important, I believe their main function is to provide a sense of meaning and purpose. They are what get us out of bed every day as human beings: To feel connected. To be present. To love and be loved. To be a contribution. To be a blessing… these aims have become my aspiration. Certainly I have specific goals– things I want to achieve– but they exist within this larger and overarching context.

My Biggest Success?

Without a doubt, the creation of and relationships with my son Lucas and husband John.

My Most Challenging Moment?

I’ve been extraordinarily blessed in my life, and while I’ve had challenges, they pale in comparison to the trials and tribulations of others. Dealing effectively with the obstacles in my life has involved the choice– sometimes made kicking and screaming– to accept them and view each one as an opportunity for learning.

My Motto?

“If one lights a fire for others, it will also brighten one’s own way”

My Favorite People/Role Models?

We have a list on display in our kitchen of such people. The majority are friends, though there are some public figures, including Jimmy Carter. While their backgrounds and unique contributions vary, the through-theme– now that I pause to think on it– seems to be a quiet, humble leadership, and the notion that self-fulfillment arises through service… through fulfilling the needs of others.

My Favorite Places/Destinations?

Our home. Anywhere new. Anywhere in nature.

My Favorite Products/Objects?

Olive oil.  I use it on and for everything. I’m like the father from ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’ with the Windex.

My Current Passions?

To be the best mother, wife, and friend I can be. To listen to and heed the call of how I can better and best serve my current and future clients and colleagues. To create work that brings meaning and inspiration to those seeking to be their most genuine, joyful, peaceful, and powerful selves.
