That relationship was tested though, when I went to college to study voice. I had a tough time understanding the way technique was explained. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t seem to master what my teachers wanted me to learn. In the process, my voice started hurting and losing its beauty and clarity. I became tense and anxious. And then I lost my voice.
Yet out of that tough experience came something really wonderful. You see, I was so desperate to find my way back to my voice– and my confident self– that I learned how to undo all of those tensions and techniques that weren’t working. Step by step, piece by piece, I removed all of the beliefs, bad habits, and tensions I’d taken on in school in an effort to sing well. And when they were gone, there was my voice again. Waiting for me.
When people asked how I sounded the way I did, or how I felt so comfortable on stage, I never used to have an answer. I just sang and didn’t think much about it. But because I had that experience in school… because I took that journey myself… I became aware of what’s necessary to find your way– back or for the first time– to Your Best Voice. And I became determined to help others to do the same.
After I graduated from University, I went on to have a great career as a performer, singing on stage and in the studio with some incredible artists and companies. It was a wonderful ride, and now I have the joy and the privilege of sharing everything I’ve learned along the way from those amazing experiences, as well as my graduate work in Psychology, with you. In my books and articles, and in my work with singers– as well as actors, speakers, executives and others– I have one goal. And that is to help you to find your true voice, and to express yourself, in music and in life, with grace, power, humility, freedom, and joy.
